How do I run this design business, anyway?

Running a web design business isn’t just spending all of your time making cool web designs. There’s lots of business things involved too. Lots of things I’m still learning. It’s creating applications for clients, contracts, setting up onboarding and offboarding of your clients, and even finding those clients in the 1st place.

I’ve always loved designing, but the business side doesn’t come naturally to me, so I’ve been spending time lately seeing what I need to do to make the business part run better for both me and all of my amazing clients.

Some of those are things like creating automated systems for sending information out to clients and creating a tracking system for completing projects on a better schedule. But this biggest thing for me will be figuring out how to find my ideal clients.

Who is my ideal client?

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about who my design business’s ideal client is, and I love to work with with small businesses, particularly small businesses in the creative field – artists, photographers, authors, and the like. Their creative mindset tends to mesh well with mine, meaning I can create brands and sites that truly represent them.
